Dirt bikes are an intimidating sport but are easy to get impressed by all the twists and turns that the pro-riders make with their super fast models. So now you have decided to take the leap and purchase a new (to you) dirt bike. Riding a dirt bike is one of the most rewarding past times out there. But it can also be a major headache if you buy dirt bike without necessary protective gear.

The best thing you can do when buying a dirt bike for your kid is to make sure that they are all geared up to minimize the impact. Buy your young rider with the correct protective gear, if they hold the interest of getting into motocross racing. Even if they are only planning on riding around the house, the safety requirements are a must to protect them every time they throw their leg over.

What protective gear do I need?

Dirt bike safety gear protects you from top to bottom ensuring you stay as protected as possible. The main pieces of gear you will need body armour, chest protector, helmet, boots, neck brace, elbow pads, kidney belt, goggles, and knee pads.

Helmet: A full-face motorcycle helmet is a must at all times for your kid on the bike. The helmet protects the side of their head and chins much more effectively than a bike helmet. Make sure you find one that fits well for your kid.

Boots: A good pair of riding boots is the first that you should buy for your little one. Motocross boots will protect their feet and shins if they happen to fall off or when they bang against the bike.

Neck Brace: This protective gear goes hand in hand with the body armour. Buy a good quality neck brace to make sure their head is supported in the event of a fall.

Goggles: These are great for riders of all ages. Riding goggles when worn will keep the dirt out of your eyes helping you to focus on controlling the bike. Goggles are a great and cheap crash prevention tool that you can incorporate from the starting day.

Kidney Belt: Dirt bike body armour has advanced tremendously over the years and now it is usual for even kids to wear kidney belts to protect their lower back and core.

Knee and Elbow Guards: Keep the kids’ elbow and knee scrape-free with a set of hard plastic elbow and knee guards.

Jersey and Pants: You can wear them over or under the body armour. Some riding pants and jerseys come with integrated knee guards saving you from buying them separately. The purpose-made motocross apparel is designed to stay cool in the humid weather, and won’t fall apart when they tip over.

Back and Chest Protection: Body armors are essential for anyone riding a dirt bike, especially young riders. Look for a chest protector with an integrated shoulder, back, and core protection to make sure the little ones stand up smiling after a tumble.

Gloves: Remember that the first thing that will hit the ground when they fall in their hands. A good pair of riding gloves will minimize the risk of reaching out to break every fall.
