Proper battery maintenance can help improve reliability, performance and service life. Use this guide to help keep your powersports battery charged, clean and ready to ride.

Step 01
Monthly Battery Maintenance

A battery requires regular maintenance to perform properly. Keep the battery fully charged and recharge it when the lights dim, the starter sounds weak, or the battery has not been used for more than two weeks.

Monthly Checklist
✓ Check the electrolyte level.
✓ Keep the top of the battery free of grime.
✓ Check cables, clamps and the battery case for obvious damage or loose connections.
✓ Clean terminals and connectors as necessary.
✓ Check for excessive sediment, sulfation or other buildup inside the battery.
✓ Make sure the exhaust tube is free of kinks and clogs.
✓ Replace and secure the caps firmly.

Finish by testing the battery with either a hydrometer or voltmeter, as appropriate for the battery type.

Step 02
Storing Your Battery

If your vehicle is stored or used infrequently, disconnect the battery cable to help eliminate electrical drain. The source material recommends charging the battery every two weeks during infrequent use.

Extended Storage

Battery Type
Conventional Battery

Electrolyte Level
